If we are always arriving and departing, it is also true that we are eternally anchored. One’s destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things.

— Henry Miller

This quote has so many layers of significance for me. For one, the obvious: we should travel to become more open-minded and open-hearted. But on a deeper level, I think it means that we can find stability and fixity in our changing lives, as long as we keep our minds open and curious. Whether that means discovering new aspects of ourselves through traditional travel or through looking at our hometown with the eyes of someone who’s just arrived there, this mentality enriches your life and gives it structure and meaning.

A life lived in fear is a life half lived.

— Unknown

Illegitimis non carborundum, or Nolite te bastardes carborundorum when translated means, don’t let the bastards get you down or don’t let the bastards grind you down. Don’t miss opportunities that would have added great value to your life. Remember that A life lived in fear is a life half-lived.

Now more than ever do I realise that I will never be content with a sedentary life, that I will always be haunted by thoughts of a sun-drenched elsewhere.

— Isabelle Eberhardt

After finally getting out and exploring the world in 2010 after years of telling myself I was too scared to fly, I’m now blissfully hooked on travel. Thoughts of my past, current and future travels consume me every day, and I know like Isabelle, I’ll never be able to settle into what society calls a “normal” life because of this. I love my life of travel and wouldn’t change it for anything!

If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.

— James A. Michener

I love how this quote is about not having regrets. It can seem scary to set off on big adventures (or even small ones), but travel can be such an amazing, life-changing experience. This quote always makes me keen to set off again.

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.

— Clifton Fadiman

All too often travelers visit other countries thinking that everything should be like their own country. This is such a flawed philosophy to take because just as Fadiman highlights in this quote, every country is unique and we should all learn to appreciate different cultures and norms. When you visit a foreign land, be prepared to learn the language and way of life. Embrace this different culture and understand that what you are familiar with back home is not necessarily going to be the same when traveling. The more we travel, the more I feel we gain a better appreciation of this. The best to do this is by exploring off the beaten path locations and interacting with the local culture. Locals will appreciate your willingness to accommodate the local cultures, cuisine, and way of life. I think we would all do well to take a step back before we travel and think about this quote.

We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us

— Anonymous

“Escaping reality” is what I frequently hear when others travel. If I am honest with myself, I have said it too! However, is that what symbolizes traveling? For some, maybe but for others, it is much more! Traveling to me is no longer about escaping my the mundane 9-5 job but is in fact about living life, experiencing different and unique cultures while witnessing everything this amazing planet has to offer. I get excited not because I am leaving work but because I am getting the opportunity to see the beauty that is our world. And for me, this is what keeps life invigorating and what keeps life from escaping me.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

— Mark Twain (disputed)

I love how this quote is about not having regrets. It can seem scary to set off on big adventures (or even small ones), but travel can be such an amazing, life-changing experience. This quote always makes me keen to set off again.

This is a quote that my Dad and fellow wanderluster shared with me when I was about eight years old. Many years later a series of events, including his passing away and my decision to become a full-time traveler, inspired me to design my first tattoo which contained a portion of the quote. I also read the poem at his memorial and named my travel blog around it. To me it says everything…don’t let fear stop you from chasing your dreams because you will never regret going after them!

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.

–Danny Kaye

Travel is so much more than just journeying to a destination – it is a great way to discover who you really are. What interests you? How do you deal with things when you are out of your comfort zone? At home, it is easy to fall into patterns and play into preconceived ideas of how you will behave but travel strips all that away.

Adventure is worthwhile.

–Aesop

I’ve had many conversations about taking opportunities that don’t result in a certificate or a potential job. Often, we need ‘proof’ to justify the time we spent on an activity, but I eventually realized that as long as I’m enjoying myself, it’s time well spent. Whatever adventure means to you, whether it’s skydiving or overcoming fear- the experience is worthwhile!

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

— Robert Frost

It’s simply beautiful and expresses how I love to live my life – off the beaten path. I’ll always take the weird path, the less likely path, the more exciting and unknown path. I take the detours and the long ways around, and it makes life simply… better.

-Danie of

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming: Wow! What a Ride!

–Hunter S. Thompson

The best moments and memories are those that were had with dirty hands, creased clothes and messed up hair. When we danced like noone is watching, when the true beauty of a place came through the dust and the dirty
